Discover Hoochee’S River Basket

Tucked along the scenic stretch of 9667 N Main St, Helen, GA 30545, United States, Hoochee’S River Basket feels like one of those places you almost don’t want to tell anyone about-because once word gets out, the line grows fast. Sitting just steps from the Chattahoochee River, this laid-back diner captures everything people love about Helen: mountain views, fresh air, and hearty Southern cooking that doesn’t try too hard to impress-it just does.

The first time I stopped in was after tubing down the river on a humid Georgia afternoon. I was sunburned, starving, and honestly expecting typical tourist fare. Instead, I found a cozy dining space buzzing with locals and out-of-towners sharing baskets piled high with golden fried shrimp, hushpuppies, and flaky catfish. That first bite of crispy fish-light batter, tender inside-made it clear this wasn’t just another roadside stop. It was the real deal.

Seafood is the star here, and it shows in both quality and preparation. The menu focuses on Southern staples: fried shrimp, oysters, crab cakes, catfish platters, and loaded po’boys. According to the National Fisheries Institute, shrimp remains America’s most popular seafood, and when you taste the perfectly seasoned shrimp basket here, it’s easy to understand why. They fry it fresh to order, which keeps the coating crisp without becoming greasy. Timing and oil temperature matter in frying-culinary experts from the Culinary Institute of America emphasize maintaining oil around 350°F for optimal texture-and you can tell the kitchen respects that process.

Beyond seafood, the menu rounds out with burgers, chicken tenders, and classic sides like coleslaw, fries, and onion rings. Everything arrives in generous portions, true to its name. The baskets aren’t just a gimmick-they’re overflowing. Families especially appreciate the shareable style. I watched one table split a seafood combo and still have leftovers.

Location plays a big role in the charm. Helen, Georgia is known for its Bavarian-style architecture and mountain-town vibe, yet this riverside eatery leans into Southern comfort rather than German influence. After a day of hiking Unicoi State Park or floating down the river, grabbing a casual meal here feels natural. Outdoor seating lets you enjoy the breeze, and during peak season, you’ll see groups in swimsuits and flip-flops lining up, which adds to the relaxed atmosphere.

Customer reviews consistently mention friendly service and quick turnaround times. In my experience, even during a busy weekend, the staff kept things moving without making anyone feel rushed. One server walked a first-time visitor through the menu, explaining the difference between the fried oyster basket and the grilled shrimp option, highlighting flavor and texture. That kind of hands-on guidance builds trust and keeps diners coming back.

From a food safety perspective, it’s worth noting that properly handled seafood is essential. The FDA outlines strict guidelines for storage temperatures and cross-contamination prevention. While diners don’t see the kitchen operations directly, the freshness and clean taste of the dishes suggest solid adherence to those standards. I didn’t experience any issues, and neither did the friends who joined me on a return visit last summer.

Pricing is reasonable for a tourist-heavy area. You’re paying for quality seafood, generous portions, and a prime riverside location. Compared to similar seafood shacks across North Georgia, the value holds up. It’s casual dining, not fine dining, so expectations are clear: paper baskets, plastic trays, and bold flavors over fancy plating.

Of course, during peak tourist months, wait times can stretch longer than expected. Parking near Main Street can also get tight, especially during festivals. Still, that’s more a reflection of Helen’s popularity than any shortcoming of the restaurant itself.

What stands out most is consistency. I’ve visited more than once over the past few years, and the shrimp basket tasted just as crisp and satisfying each time. That reliability-combined with its prime location, approachable menu, and welcoming vibe-makes it a dependable stop whether you’re a first-time visitor or a regular exploring the North Georgia mountains.

  • We found this place as we were passing through and it was amazing. Staff was so friendly!! We got one of the smash burgers and a vegetarian option for a sandwich. Also got their signature fries. The food was absolutely delicious! Everything was fresh and made from scratch. A very fun place and a great place to get a filling meal. 10/10 a must go. It is small but so worth it.

  • Great food, great prices, great portions , and amazing seating right off the Chattahoochee. We had breakfast and lunch here, two different visits. Breakfast we had chocolate chip pancakes , cold brew infused French toast. Pancakes were huge , soft , and full of flavors French toast was MASSIVE. Cream cheese in the middle. Amazing. Lunch we had the chicken Philly and the Bodega Burger. Super delicious burger. Tons of flavor, breaker was juicy and not dry AT ALL. If you are in Helen, this is a must.

  • This family-owned spot served up the most delicious burger I’ve ever had; the smash burger is next-level. Everything tasted fresh, and the setting couldn’t be better. The restaurant sits right on the bank of a small river, with outdoor seating that gives you a quiet, scenic view. The servers were friendly and attentive, and the whole place has a relaxed, genuine vibe. It’s tucked just outside the hustle of Main Street Helen, so getting there takes a little commitment—especially if there’s an event going on and traffic is backed up. We decided to walk the mile, and it was absolutely worth it. If you’re heading toward Anna Ruby Falls, the restaurant is right at the junction. The washroom was spotless, and you’ll be greeted by a photo of a donkey with the caption “Nice Ass”—a perfect bit of humor to match the place’s charm. Fresh food, great people, unbeatable setting. Don’t miss it.

  • If you’re looking for a fantastic hole in the wall restaurant, Hoochie is the place! We loved it so much that we ate here 3 times while on our vacation to Helen! Breakfast and lunch is phenomenal! My husband even got lunch for breakfast one morning. It’s a small restaurant, but the staff is friendly and the service is fast and definitely worth the trip! We highly recommend trying the breakfast burrito, the Joey (sloppy joe), and the chopped cheese burger (which won best burger in Georgia award)! We will definitely be back!

  • Really neat little roadside stop with mouthwatering burgers. I have tried the original hoochees burger, the hidden menu whiskey burger, and the breakfast burrito. All were great but my favorite was the original burger for its classic flavor and affordable price. They have a dog friendly outdoor patio right beside a creek with shade umbrellas and a little indoor seating area if it’s bad weather. Parking is tight but there are several spaces around the back to park or you can park out of the way at the gas station. If you are in Helen area go here!

  • By the river so calm, what a breakfast delight, Hoochee’s River Basket gets it just right! Eggs cooked just perfect, fluffy and fine, With crispy potatoes that truly do shine. Add savory sausage — oh my, oh my, One bite of this plate and you’re sold, no lie! Simple, delicious, and served with a smile, Worth every step and worth every mile. Five stars for Tiffany - I’ll say it again — Hoochee’s is a must when you’re hungry in Helen!

  • This place doesn't look like much on the outside but don't let that stop you from stopping here to eat. These mom and pops places are always the best. My first time trying it and I've been to helen 5 times now. This by far has been the best place I've eaten at aside from the Thai place. The value for the amount of food is a great deal. I got the quiche Lorraine and a fathead biscuit. The quiche came with a side of bacon and it was nice and crispy just how I like it. The quiche and biscuit was also out of this world. Definitely eating here again next time I'm in helen. The view from the inside over looking the field across the street and the river running by was beautiful as well.

  • Best breakfast and lunch in Helen! Everything on their menu is amazing. We usually go for the breakfast burrito, biscuits and gravy, biscuit with meat, egg and cheese, and potatoes. Their sausage is delicious (and they get their breakfast meats from a local distributor out of Gainesville, Georgia) and if you eat anything here, you won’t be disappointed. Their customer service is fabulous and we look forward to eating here anytime we head to Helen.. Do yourself a favor and give Hoochies a try for breakfast or lunch! If you go for lunch, try the Buddha burger or the Chicken Philly!!
